Russia World Cup 2018 Review
Hey guys, I am back with another blog and this one will be my overall review of the World Cup 2018 in Russia. For me, it has been an excellent tournament to watch and in this blog, I will go through a lot of different things such as players who played well at the tournament, games of the tournament, surprises of the tournament and a lot more. I would also love to get your opinions about the tournament in the comments so don’t be afraid to leave them below. Let’s get right into this blog guys.
The group stages
I missed some of the games due to work but from a lot of the ones I have seen we had some really close exciting games. For example, Portugal vs Spain which for me was one of the games of the tournament was absolutely unbelievable and another game that sticks in my head was Germany vs Sweden for the exact same reasons. It was so tense and when Kroos scored that great goal, things felt electric. A big shock was definitely Germany going out in the group stages because although the world champions never do well in the next tournament, we just never seen it coming with them as they still have a very talented squad.
Games of the tournament
Here I am just going to list a few of my top games from the tournament as it was so difficult to choose:
- Croatia vs Argentina
- Russia vs Croatia
- France vs Argentina
- Portugal vs Spain
- Nigeria vs Argentina
- Brazil vs Belgium
- Serbia vs Switzerland
Players of the tournament
This was also a very tough list for me to put together but I definitely have players in my head that can be put into this. I will list 10 and in no particular order here they are:
- Kylian Mbappe
- Eden Hazard
- Kevin De Bruyne
- Jordan Pickford
- Harry Kane
- Raphael Varane
- Aleksandr Golovin
- Xherdan Shaqiri
- Ivan Perisic
- Domagoj Vida
Surprises of the tournament
This was a world cup with a lot of surprises and I plan on discussing a few of them here.
Russia– Not many people had seen them being any decent at their own tournament but by all means getting to a quarter-final and only losing on penalties was a success for them. They were only 70th in the Fifa world rankings and the lowest ranked nation at the tournament as well so doing so well can only lift their spirits massively.
Germany– Oh dear is all I can really say about them. I wouldn’t say they had a massively difficult group either so losing to both Mexico and South Korea was an absolute disaster for them. I don’t know where this will leave Germany going forward but I think they will do well in Euro 2020 which will be upon us in no time.
Lionel Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo– How the best 2 players around right now have never scored a knockout game goal at any world cup is absolutely baffling. It may also have been the last we see of them at a world cup so the chance looks like it could be the end of a golden era with these 2.
Croatia– They have been fantastic in this tournament and were unlucky to lose to the eventual winners. I remember watching that game with Argentina and they looked like they were a real threat throughout. A 3-0 win that night wasn’t even undeserved either so it’s crazy how a nation of less than 5 million has achieved what they did.
Belgium- With their squad you must wonder why I have listed them as a surprise but here is why. Despite the talent they have, they don’t normally turn up at big tournaments and they played a very high-quality level of football here. Eden Hazard was a massive part of that but he wasn’t the only one. They could be a real threat at Euro 2020 so keep an eye out for them.
The world champions France
I wouldn’t say France have played absolutely amazing each game throughout this world cup but what they have done is grind out wins in tough situations. They got through the group stages comfortably, edged out a last 16 thriller with Argentina, ground out wins against Uruguay in the quarter-final and Belgium in the semi-final. In the final, a couple of referee decisions went in their favour but they struck when they needed to against a tough Croatia side. A great 4-2 win at the end against Croatia but 20 years on from their home tournament win they have their 2nd world cup win and with that squad, I wouldn’t rule out more success.
My final thoughts
Well, we have had a great world cup in 2018 in my opinion. Congratulations to France on winning it and also a big thanks to Russia for hosting an exciting month of football. Thank you as always for checking out my blog content. I hope you all enjoyed my review and don’t forget to leave your opinions in the comments.
